VERIMUSIC is developing a method and a protocol for documenting the human provenance of a musical work. Both will be published under an open licence so that anyone can examine and improve them.
Our commitment
Since 2025, VERIMUSIC has been developing a method and a protocol for documenting the human provenance of a musical work. We have committed to making our tools, standards and protocols freely available under an open licence so that anyone can examine and improve them.
A provenance standard is only useful if it is adopted. For that to happen, everyone, including platforms and distributors, must be able to examine it, debate it and build on it.
The licences we have chosen
For each type of publication, we have chosen a licence based on the uses it permits.
| What is published | Licence | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| Specifications, standards and protocols | Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) | Any use, including commercial use, provided the source is credited, the licence is indicated and any changes are noted. |
| Code for the tools | GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPL v3) | Any use, including commercial use; anyone who runs a modified version as an online service must make its source code available to the service's users. |
| Observatory data | Open Database License (ODbL) | Free reuse of the aggregated and anonymised data, provided the source is credited and any derived database made public is released under the same licence. |
The open data contains only aggregated and anonymised findings, never raw accounts. We refer to an individual case on our pages only with the person's consent, as set out on our Privacy page.
Work in progress
The method will set out how to document, piece by piece, the way a work was created and what part AI played, if any. The protocol will define a common format for this documentation, designed to be readable by both people and machines. The three-level declaration scale called for in the manifesto will accompany the method and protocol. It distinguishes between human creation, AI-assisted work and AI-generated work.
We will announce each publication in News and analysis.
